Crowdsourcing as an online, distributed problemsolvingmodel (Brabham, 2008) suggests that approachingcrowds and asking for contributions canhelp organizations develop solutions to a variety ofbusiness challenges. In this context, the crowd isoften treated as a single construct: a general collectionof people that can be targeted by firms.However, just as organizations and their problemsvary, so do the types of crowds and the differentkinds of contributions they can offer the firm. Thefollowing typology of crowdsourcing suggests thatmanagers can begin by identifying a business problemand then working outward from there, considering(1) what type of contributions are requiredfrom members of the crowd and (2) how thesecontributions will collectively help find a solutionto their business problem.First, the types of contributions required fromthe crowd could either call for specific objectivecontributions or for subjective content. Specificobjective contributions help to achieve an impartialand unbiased result; here, bare facts matter andcrowds can help find or create them. Subjectivecontent contributions revolve around the judgments,opinions, perceptions, and beliefs of individuals ina crowd that are sought to collectively help solve aproblem that calls for a subjective result.Second, contributions need to be processed collectivelyto add value. Depending on the problem tobe solved, the contributions must either be aggregatedor filtered. Under aggregation, contributionscollectively yield value when they are simply combinedat face value to inform a decision, withoutrequiring any prior validation. For instance, politicalelections call for people to express their choices viaelectoral ballots, which are then tallied to calculatethe sums and averages of their collective preferences;the reasons for their choices are not
