1. Introduction

Cost-effective pretreatment technologies are essential to successful operation of future biorefineries which convert biomass into a spectrum of fuel molecules and industrial chemicals (Haghighi Mood et al., 2013; Sheldon, 2014). To this end, different pretreatment strategies are being developed to improve sugar yield from lignocellulosic biomass samples by increasing accessibility of enzymes to cellulose fibers (Meng & Ragauskas, 2014), decreasing lignin content (Singh, Shukla, Tiwari, & Srivastava, 2014; Zeng, Zhao, Yang, & Ding, 2014) or transforming native cellulose crystalline structure into less recalcitrant forms (Cheng et al., 2011; da Costa Sousa et al., 2016). However, suitable pretreatment technologies have not been established due in part to complex interactions between plant cell walls and biomass pretreatment as well as coupling between the biomass recalcitrant factors (Cheng, Zhang, Simmons, & Singh, 2015). This requires further study of pretreatment processes to identify efficient ways to deconstruct biomass. Steam explosion is being recognized as one of the leading pretreatment technologies for agricultural residues with lower environmental impact (Gaur et al., 2015). During steam explosion, the biomass is saturated with steam at high pressure, followed bya sudden decompression. Major structural changes include hydrolysis of hemicellulose by organic acids produced during the process (autohydrolysis) as well as relocation and degradation of lignin (Singh, Suhag, & Dhaka, 2015). Although steam explosion pretreatment has been the technology of choice for a number of herbaceous biomass feedstock, exogenous acid catalysts such as H2SO4, H3PO4, oxalic, maleic and fumaric acids, and other acid-generating compounds such as SO2 and CO2 need to be combined with steam pretreatment for woody biomass samples (Lopez-Linares et al., 2015; Olsen, Arantes, & Saddler, 2015). Addition of acids decreases time and temperature of reaction, leading to a more complete removal of hemicellulose (Behera, Arora, Nandhagopal, & Kumar, 2014). Extensive studies on steam explosion pretreatment have offered important insights into this process; however, the relative importance of the factors affecting the enzymatic digestibility is still not fully understood (DeMartini et al., 2015; Gaur et al., 2015; Liu, Qin, Li, & Yuan, 2015). While no clear correlation between biomass crystallinity and sugar conversion has been found in many studies that involved steam explosion pretreatment (Huang et al., 2015; Kapoor et al., 2015; Liu et al., 2015), the overall degree of order in cellulose, measured by FTIR, has been shown to play a negative role in enzymatic hydrolysis of rice straw, cotton stalk and mustard stalk (Gaur et al., 2015). Specific surface area has been correlated positively with glucose conversion at 72 h enzymatic hydrolysis of several agricultural residues pretreated by steam explosion, dilute acid, and alkali (Gaur et al., 2015; Kapoor et al., 2015). Yet, in another
