1. Introduction

IntroductionA linear dispersion analysis on system performance can beused to predict the future needs of ultra-long haul and40 Gbps systems as it relates to dispersion compensation.The equations developed in Ref. [1] clearly show that theamount of residual dispersion at the end of a system thatone can accommodate is of the order of 1500 ps/nm for10 Gbps systems and only of the order 100 ps/nm for40 Gbps system. By considering an ultra-long haul transmissionat 10 Gbps system, it is seen that as we go to distancelonger than 600 km we need to start using dispersioncompensating devices in some of the in-line amplifiers. Assoon as transmission bit rates increase from 10 to 40 Gbpsand beyond, chromatic dispersion compensation becomes acritical issue on all kind of fibers, and the periodic dispersioncompensation for 40 Gbps terrestrial systems has beeninvestigated, with a new method being proposed on highlydispersed pulses to provide the evidence that the position ofdispersion compensating devices can be placed all at theend of the system [2]. Pizzinat et al. further analyzed thesetechniques using computer simulations [3].
