We use a simple example to illustrate the basic idea of ourapproach. We assume that all nodes are static and distributedin a two dimensional space. As shown in Fig. 1, weassume that S is the source node and D1, D2 and D3 are threedifferent destination nodes. When S wants to send packetsto D1, it can find an efficient path by greedy forwarding.However, when S wants to send a packet to D2, it uses thegreedy forwarding and the packet will reach node P.Because of the existence of the void area, P is closer toD2 than all of the P's neighbors. So P cannot reach D2 bygreedy forwarding and is called a local minimum node.Fortunately, we have various routing algorithms [14] to let Pchange from the greedy mode to the perimeter routingmode. The packet will be forwarded along a detour pathuntil it arrives at node B, where the forwarding mode ischanged from the perimeter routing mode to greedyforwarding. Node B is called a landmark node. After nodeB, the packet can be forwarded to destination D2 by greedyforwarding. Because D2 is shaded by the hole, the originalsimple greedy forwarding has to take a detour. This detourpath can be long.To deal with routing inefficiency caused by the detour, wecan let either destination node D2 or landmark node Binform source S that such a detour occurred. After receivingthe message, S keeps a record that associates D2 with B,meaning that if the destination is D2, forward throughintermediate node B. After that, if S later needs to sendpackets to D2, it can send them to B first (using B as anintermediate target) by greedy forwarding. The path will befrom S to B and then to D2, instead of from S to P, to B, andthen to D2. This new path can be much shorter and may bethe best path to get to D2 from S. The significance of thetechnique depends on how likely S needs to send packets toD2 again.

1. Introduction

Human creativity has presented its great capability to improveour living conditions and advance worldwide civilisations (e.g.,light bulbs, airplanes, and smartphones). Nowadays, humanity iseven defined by creativity in not only artistic fields like literatureand music, but also virtually every other domain. Due to its mysteriouspower, humanity has never stopped pursuing the ultimateanswer of creativity. Although an enormous number of valuableresults about creativity have been discovered, there is still a longway to go. Especially, in recent years, creativity has been the corecompetitive advantage [1]. Various kinds of creative products,activities, and services have been the key concerns all over theworld [2].Computing has already been the seemingly perfect tool tosupport human creativity. In the academic field, it helps researchersto understand human creativity in a truly scientific way.A variety of platforms, systems, and apps are continuously developedto assist creative people. Recently, the Guardian has selectedthe top 50 apps for creative minds [3]. A project named DevArt (artmade with code) is commissioned by Google to push the possibilitiesof creativity and technology [4]. Various kinds of computingtechnologies are combined and utilised to create digital artinstallations. For instances, Wishing Wall enables people to turntheir wishes into beautiful butterflies. Colour of World is able toallow people to discover unknown places through the explorationof colours. This kind of new tendency of computing technologieshas attracted great attention from both developers and artistsall over the world. There is even an exhibition held in LondonBarbican named the Digital Revolution filled with various creativeinstallations [5].Other good efforts also have been made to use computing togenerate not just simply creative work, but “creativity” itself. Thefield is known as computational creativity, which aims to generatemachine creativity through imitating human creativity [6]. Computationalcreativity has gone up from the facilitation level intothe cooperation level,with respect to supporting human creativity.The computing in computational creativity could work as a“partner” to cooperate with creative people in some kind of creationprocess, such as music improvisation and dance performance[7]. For now, the relationship between creativity and computinghas entered into a new era [8]. Due to the crucial difficulties withincreativity, such as uncertainty and vagueness, there are still inevitablelimitations within the simulation of human creativity [9].New or novel approaches to improve human creativity are stillurgently demanded.That is why various new concepts are continuously emerging,especially Creative Computing. Based on the persistent explorationof the possibilities between computing and creativity, computingcould finally be deemed as truly creative, rather than appearing tobe creative. By doing computing in creative ways, Creative Computingmay be able to go further from the cooperation level into

The two antennas are planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA) that are fedwith microstrip feed lines. The critical design factors are minimizing mass while creating ISM band and GPS L1band antennas and developing data transmission schemes for maximum usage of all communication channels.The designed board is a 60 mm diameter, 0.6 mm thick circular FR4 board that weighs approximately 5 g.1. IntroductionCurrently, atmospheric researchers rely heavily on remote sensingtechnologies such as satellites to predict the weather; however, there isa tremendous need for additional in-situ measurements to improveweather models and create more accurate forecasts. Current in-situmeasurements for hurricane reconnaissance primarily rely on devicesknown as dropsondes. The dropsondes have a terminal velocity of11 m/s at sea level, and approximately 21 m/s at a 12 km altitude[1].For more quiescent conditions, weather balloons carrying radiosondes[2] are launched around the globe every day to measure the propertiesof the atmosphere. This article showcases the antenna design andapplication of a novel type of atmospheric sensor which our group isdeveloping as an alternative to these devices.The devices will be part of a new atmospheric monitoring systemknown as GlobalSense[3]. The system features an ensemble ofdisposable airborne drifters, called environmental motes or eMotes,as can be seen inFig. 1, that will be carried by wind currents much likenaturally occurring dandelion or maple seeds. The GlobalSense systeminnovation is based on the continuing trend for ubiquitous sensing[4,5],also known as the Internet-of-Things[6,7], where extremelylarge numbers of disposable, low-cost electronic devices measurevarious parameters and communicate that data in different formatsand frequencies for various applications.Once deployed from balloons or aircraft, eMotes will transmit lowpower signals in one of the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM)radio bands to avoid expensive licensing requirements. Thefixed ormobile receiver platforms will contain hardware and software to gatherand process sensor and other data from multiple eMotes within rangeand store or retransmit the information to other locations. TheGlobalSense system has been designed to support up to 50,000eMotes operating simultaneously.The GlobalSense system could benefit a wide range of applicationswith sensitivity to atmospheric conditions including but certainly notlimited to energy, transportation, agriculture, construction, insurance,and tourism. The initial focus is on improving weather analysis andforecasting by greatly expanding the time and space density of criticalweather parameters such as temperature, pressure, wind velocity, andhumidity throughout as much of the relevant atmospheric volume aspossible.With the appropriate chemical sensors integrated on eMote plat-forms, the GlobalSense system could monitor air quality and green-house gases such as carbon dioxide and methane for global climatechange initiatives[8,9]. Even broader applications involve measuringparameters of interest for surveillance, reconnaissance, and relatedapplications. The modular and interoperable system design makes itrelatively straightforward to integrate other sensors that have theappropriate specifications.The current prototype eMotes have a mass around 7 g with aterminal velocity<5m/swhich provides greater dwell time in theatmosphere than typical environmental sensors. Thefinal design goalsare an eMote mass≤1 gand a terminal velocity on the order of 1 m/s
